Naturopathic medicine is a specialized primary health care profession that integreates effective traditional and natural forms of medicine with modern evidence –based scientific knowledge and western medical diagnostics.
The practice of naturopathic medicine involves disease diagnosis as well as treatment and prevention using natural therapies. The philosophy is to restore and stimulate the body’s ability to heal itself and to treat the underlying cause of illness, disease or injury. Symptoms of disease are seen as warning signals of improper functioning of the body, and unfavourable lifestyle habits. The primary goal of naturopathic treatment is to address the cause of illnesses, rather than simply treating or suppressing symptoms.
Naturopathic Medicine at Damen Optimal Health addresses the whole person and emphasizes disease as a process rather than as an entity. In other words, the Naturopathic Doctor is focused on the “why” as well as with the “what” of an illness or disease. By selecting natural medicinal substances and holistic healing techniques your ND reduces many risks associated with pharmaceutical interventions, by avoiding the suppression of symptoms when possible and stimulating the individual’s unique healing process.

The initial naturopathic assessment consists of a thorough health history that will explore all aspects that impact your health. The physical problem focused examination will utilize standard medical techniques and Oriental/Chinese observation of tongue, pulse to form assessment which will help identify the source of the problem. It may be necessary to conduct an analysis of blood, urine, saliva, hair and other functional tests; as well as review of conventional medical reports and labs. The Naturopathic Doctor will then go over the diagnosis and the suggested therapies that may be used to treat the problem. The recommended treatment is often prescribed and performed on the first visit depending on the complexity of the case. The typical naturopathic initial assessment takes between 60 and 90 minutes. The Naturopath will inform the patient of the extent of treatment recommended and how long it can be expected to last. The goal of the Naturopathic is to resolve and restore optimal health. The Naturopathic Doctor at Damen Optimal Health Team works side by side with the other practitioners in order to assist patients in achieving full recovery and their optimal state of health and well-being.
