Undergraduate University education, followed by a 4 year full-time study in an accredited naturopathic school (CCNM, Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine)
The 4 year naturopathic program incorporates basic medical science courses such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology and pharmacology. Also focus on naturopathic principles and therapeutics such as botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, physical medicine, oriental medicine and 1500 hours of supervised clinical experiences.
Two sets of licensing board exams are required in Ontario to practice. In addition with basic board exams Dr. Shih further with additional board exams on Prescription authority examination (to have medication prescription right for Ontario Naturopathic Doctors) and Naturopathic Infusion (IV infusion therapy)Extensive ongoing continuing educational courses.
Dr. Shih’s practice primary focus on three major issues:
Hormonal issues: ( menopause ) imbalances using botanicals (herbal medicine), nutrients and bio-identical hormones to help reduce menopausal associated symptoms, as well as prevention of post menopausal associated risks (Osteoporosis, cardiovascular risks). Thyroid issues such as hypothyroid diseases support and bio-identical compounded thyroids instead of synthetic thyroid medications.
Naturopathic support for cancer patients by various natural modalities with evidence based approach (Nutriceuticals, botanicals, dietary nutrition, IV therapy). General support of energy, fatigue, quality of life and offer scientific evidence based suggestions to help patients make educated decisions of their condition.
Sensitivity and intolerance support for patients suffer from digestive, skin and environmental exposure. The goal is to balance immune system and support proper detoxification.
